man exercise after eating

Is it better for me to eat before or after a workout to build muscle?

I wanted to achieve my goal shape but I am wondering if what I’m doing is right thus, is it better for me to eat before or after a workout to build muscle? And because I wasn’t going to come out and say it, my pre-workout snack did end up consisting of bacon, a breakfast sandwich from the hotel breakfast buffet, and a few more chocolate chip cookies. This is the crux of what makes me hate the morning. For a moment I’m full of energy and determination. I feel as though I could go out and start sweating and tearing up anything and everything in sight. I was on fire! Only I had no fuel, so I had to literally catch the running bus back to the hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon resting on my couch and watching pre-workout infomercials. The last thing I want to do before a workout is eat.

The perfect night before workout dinner. Image by Ashley Musgrave, screengrab from FitlabTV, via Facebook I’m going to eat before a workout. Is that crazy? There is no worse feeling than that of coming home after a workout with your tank completely empty. It’s as if the sweat glands of your body are used to building energy and oxygen for your workout, and then one day they just shut down. The only way I can explain it is to say it’s like how you think you could go out and work out the next day and then right when you leave the gym, the idea of working out is ruined. You see it happen every single day, but you just can’t imagine it actually happening to you. The next morning, you know exactly what to expect from your workouts. It’s a little scary and gross. It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to work out, so I’ve decided that for my first workout day after I come back from traveling I’m going to workout at 5:30 a.m. After that, I’m going to have dinner before the workout. There is no shortage of resources on the internet about the health benefits of a post-workout snack, so I’m going to check out my options.

I do eat before a workout, but if I wait until after to eat, I’m sure to get hungry. I don’t want to get hungry before my workout. I’m going to eat before a workout. Is that crazy? Or am I going to lose my drive and end up just doing an hour of yoga and watching a Netflix documentary about the Olympics before I go to bed? At this point it really doesn’t matter. I’ll do what I want. If that means eating a few cookies right before my workout, I’ll do it. Because what I really want is to come home from traveling, watch Netflix on my couch, eat a banana, drink a glass of milk, and fall asleep watching the next episode of Stranger Things. So what’s the worst that can happen? I’m eating dinner right after my workout.

There’s a lot to be said about starting the morning with a workout. Not only does it give me a chance to work out before traveling, it helps me with my day after. I don’t take too many flights, so it’s not something I have to think about every time. It’s just always there. Before a workout, I have a feeling of pure excitement and confidence. That feeling is what will carry me through the workout. I know that because I’ve experienced it so many times before, in fact I’m pretty sure I’ll be that person that shouts it as they run out of the gym. “I’m gonna come back and eat a whole plate of bacon right after!”
